Rename an Item in Business Central Master Data

Item renaming should be used with caution. Before renaming an item, check whether it is already in use by reviewing the item ledger entries.

 

On an item open Ledger Entries to check activity. 

 

 

Best practice is to block the existing item and create a new one.

Renaming an item in Business Central changes the primary key (No.) throughout the database. While the system allows this, it is generally discouraged when ledger entries exist because it can complicate reporting, audit trails, and data consistency across related custom modules such as those created by CUK (Contracts and Refs). It also plays more friendly with the data rep tool!
